The 2011 China RoboCup Open was just finished in Lanzhou, Gansu. During this year’s China biggest RoboCup competition, our teams from the CSE department won two trophies in the small-size league and the kid-size league. Our teams also won the second place in the family-size league, the third place in rescue league and several technique rewards and single-match champions.

The China RoboCup Open is the most renowned competition in Robotics. It brings the top experts and researchers from various related fields such as electronic information, communication, mechanic engineering, human-machine interface, sensors and visions, etc. together to achieve one ultimate goal: to form a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players against human opponents. The Participants includes most famous teams from universities and institutes all over China. This year’s competition was held in Lanzhou, Aug. 23 – Aug 25. The RoboCup team from our department was led by the associate professor, Dr. XIONG Rong from the Institute of Cyber-Systems and Control, and attended the small-size, kid-size, family-size and rescue leagues.

During the matches in small-size league, our team “ZJUNlict” beat the two-time champions from the Dalian University of Technology with a score of 6:0; also an overwhelming victory of 7:0 in the final match versus the team from the China Agricultural University and won the champion. During the kid-size league, our competitors included some top teams from Tsinghua Univ., Dalian University of Technology, and Beijing Information Science and Technology University. The winning of the Team “ZJUDancer” made us the only team in the China RoboCup Open history that crowned in this league three-times straight. The family-size league competition more focused on the abilities of robots accomplishing various tasks under a family-simulated environment. The CSE team for this league, “ZJUPanda”, lost in the final match with a very close score to another team from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and ended with a second place. They also won the seven’th place in an international compatition early, and was a first-time attendents for RoboCup Open, China. For the rescue league, the team “ZJUBase” was just assembled in June this year, right before this compitition. Despite all the disadvantages, by the end of this match, they still won the third place in this league, showing great potencials for a better place the next year.
